Tsuruga, Fukui / 旧北陸線トンネル群
Former Hokuriku Line Tunnels
The Tsuruga-Fukui section of the former Hokuriku Line opened in 1896 (Meiji 29). On the Tsuruga-Imajo stretch, with its steep mountains and slopes, 12 tunnels were dug, 11 of which still remain; along with embankments, bridges and culverts, many railway heritage structures of the time pass on the best of Meiji civil engineering.
