Wakayama, Wakayama / 紀州東照宮
Kishu Toshogu Shrine
Founded in 1621, enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu and Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first lord of the Kishu domain; a National Important Cultural Property. Its richly coloured main hall and worship hall carry on the style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period and around them are early Edo carvings and wall paintings of the Kano and Tosa schools. It is still affectionately called "Gongen-sama".
