Mt. Hakkai Ropeway and Observatory
Mt. Hakkai, long revered as a sacred mountain, is one of Japan's 200 notable mountains and one of the three Echigo mountains with Echigo-Komagatake and Nakanodake. The ropeway reaches the summit station in about 5 minutes, and about 5 minutes' walk further is an observatory with a 360-degree panorama; on clear days you can see the Joshinetsu mountains, the Sea of Japan and Sado Island. The green season starts with katakuri (dogtooth violet) flowers near the base station. The climbing season is June to November; the highest peak, Nyudodake, is 1,778 m and the climb is for advanced hikers, but the ropeway takes you to the 4th station for an easier course.

30 minutes by bus from Muikamachi Station (JR Joetsu Line / Hokuhoku Line) to the Hakkaisan Ski Area terminus; 20 minutes by car from Muikamachi IC (Kan-Etsu Expressway) (left onto Route 253, left onto Route 17, then right at the Yosoka Shindo junction).
