Hagi Castle Town

A castle town where the old streets remain vividly: solid white-walled samurai houses, earthen walls with summer oranges peeking over, and the crank-shaped "kagi-magari" lanes. The birthplaces of figures active from the end of the Edo period into the Meiji Restoration, such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Kido Takayoshi, still stand. The streets are laid out in a grid, with old-house cafes, shops and historic sites; the townscape is registered as part of the World Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution".
