Ofunato, Iwate / 碁石海岸
Goishi Coast
About 6 km of coastline at the tip of the Massaki Peninsula, which juts out south of Ofunato Bay; it is a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, and one of the Sanriku Geopark geosites. The name is said to come from the black pebbles, polished by waves, that cover Goishi Beach. Highlights include Anatoshi-iso, a rock with three sea-worn arches; Kaminari-iwa, whose thunder-like boom is one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan"; the steep Ranboya cliffs; and the white Goishizaki Lighthouse in the pines. Walking paths link the spots.

About 15 minutes by car from Ofunato Goishi-kaigan IC (Sanriku Expressway). From the Information Center, about 5 minutes by car to the Anatoshi-iso car park, about 3 minutes on foot to Kaminari-iwa and Ranboya, and about 3 minutes by car to the Goishi-misaki car park near the lighthouse.
