Gion Shinbashi Historic District
Gion began as the town before the gate of the Gion shrine, and this area was developed as a teahouse district of the six blocks of Gion (Gion Uchi-rokucho), closely tied to the performing arts from the late Edo to the early Meiji period. Refined teahouse-style townhouses stand in neat rows, forming a traditional scene together with the Shirakawa stream, stone paving and rows of cherry trees.
