Former Saito Family Villa

A modern Japanese-style residence on a site of 1,300 tsubo, built in 1918 as a guest house by Saito Kijuro, fourth head of the Saito family, one of Niigata's three great merchant houses. It is a national place of scenic beauty and a component of the Japan Heritage "Minatomachi Niigata". Its strolling garden makes clever use of the sand-dune terrain, with a different view from each room: fresh greenery, green maples, autumn leaves and snow. Inside you can learn about the Saito family and enjoy matcha and sweets while viewing the garden, and the garden is lit up in the autumn-leaf season.
