Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi / 青木ヶ原樹海
Aokigahara Forest
A forest on the north-west foot of Mt. Fuji, about 3,000 hectares, formed on lava that flowed in the Jogan eruption of 864. Trees spread their roots over the uneven lava layer, a distinctive sight, and lava caves such as the Fugaku Wind Cave and Narusawa Ice Cave are scattered through it; there are maintained trails and guided tours.
