Closed for weather: ropeways, boats, bridges and gardens that stop in wind, rain and snow
Official pages warn that ropeways, sightseeing boats, lighthouses and even gardens can stop or close in bad weather, sometimes without notice. Here are the notes we counted, real examples, and a simple backup plan.
"Open every day" on an official page often comes with a second line: except in bad weather. We read the hours and closing-day notes copied from official pages on this site.
What we looked at
- Base: 1,155 published spots with opening-hours or closing-day notes from an official or local-government tourism page (checked 2026-09-24 to 2026-09-28).
- Method: text search on 2026-09-29 for weather, wind, storms, typhoons, rough seas, high water and snow, then a read of the matches. The numbers are "at least"; many places that stop in bad weather may not say so in these notes.

What can stop
Ropeways and boats
- Nagasaki Ropeway: 9:00-22:00, but may not run due to weather or maintenance.
- Mt. Inasa, Nagasaki: the ropeway and slope car may stop for inspection or in bad weather.
- Shinhotaka Ropeway, Gifu: open every day, but may not run in bad weather or during scheduled inspections.
- Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (pirate ship), Kanagawa: open every day, with schedule changes or cancellations in bad weather.
- Kurashiki River Cruise, Okayama: no service in bad weather, and may stop for low water or events.
Bridges, lighthouses and outdoor sights
- Tsunoshima Bridge, Yamaguchi: may close in strong winds.
- Jigokudani Monkey Park, Nagano: open all year, but may close without notice due to weather, the monkeys' behaviour or natural disasters.
- Nago Pineapple Park, Okinawa: open all year, but may close in typhoons or other bad weather.
Even gardens and castles
- Ritsurin Garden, Kagawa: open all year, but closes if a storm warning is issued for Takamatsu.
- Okayama Castle: may close in stormy weather or for inspections.
A simple backup plan
- Put weather-sensitive stops early in your trip, so you have a spare day if they stop.
- Check the official page on the morning you go. Some notes say "without notice".
- Keep an indoor option nearby, such as a museum, in case the ropeway or boat does not run.
