Japan's morning markets: go early, because many are over by noon
Of 101 food spots on this site, 8 markets close by about 14:00 and one is over by 7:30. Here are their official hours, the days they run, and how to fit them into a trip.

A morning market (asaichi) is one of the easiest ways to eat local food in Japan, but the timing catches visitors out. Many are winding down by the time a late breakfast is over.
What we looked at
- Base: 101 published food spots on this site with opening hours from an official or local-government tourism page (checked 2026-09-24 to 2026-09-28).
- Method: on 2026-09-29 we read the hours of all 101 and picked the markets that close by about 14:00. We found 8.

Tsukiji Outer Market in Tokyo is not on the list, but its page says the streets are liveliest from about 9:00 to 13:00 and most shops close by evening.
Three things to check
- The day. Some markets run only on certain days: Kochi's is a Sunday market, Yuriage's runs on Sundays and public holidays, and Mutsu-Minato's runs Monday to Saturday.
- The season. Hijiori, Miyagawa and Hakodate change their hours by season.
- "Sold out". Some stalls close when they sell out, so earlier is better.
How to fit one in
- Stay nearby the night before if the market opens before trains start.
- Plan breakfast at the market rather than before it.
