How much do sights cost in Japan? What 944 official admission fees add up to
Across 944 admission fees copied from official pages, the typical adult price was around 700 yen, and about one in five places started with "free". Here is the spread by type of place, and how to budget without guessing.

"How much should I budget for sightseeing in Japan?" Rather than guess, we counted: every published spot on this site has its admission fee copied from the official page. Here is what 944 of them add up to.
How we counted (read this first)
- Base: 944 admission-fee entries on published spots, checked on official or local-government tourism pages between 2026-09-24 and 2026-09-28.
- Method: on 2026-09-29, a script read each entry. If it started with "free", we counted it as free. Otherwise it took the first price listed for adults (or, if no adult price was named, the first price in yen).
- Limits: this is an estimate. Some entries list several prices (for example, a garden and a museum inside it), and the script took only the first. 63 entries could not be read this way and are left out. Treat the numbers as a rough guide, and check each place's fact table for the real price.
What we found
- 190 of 944 entries start with "free".
- For the 691 entries with a readable adult price:
- the median (the middle value) was 700 yen;
- half were between 450 and 1,300 yen;
- the highest was 8,800 yen.

In short: most temples, gardens and museums cost a few hundred yen; activities cost more.
How to budget without guessing
- List the places you plan to visit, and open each fact table on this site. The price, the check date and the official link are there.
- Add up the adult prices for the places you will actually enter.
- Check for discounts you may qualify for: student, senior, disability, and combined tickets. Local-resident discounts do not apply to visitors. See "Tourist prices" in Japan.
- Carry cash for temples, shrines and hot springs. See Is Japan still cash only?.
- Check the date. Prices change, and some places have announced new prices.
