Child prices at Japanese sights: who counts as an adult, and when small children go free
Japanese sights set child prices by school year, not only by age, and "adult" often starts at junior high school. Here is what 944 official admission entries say, with examples.

If you travel with children, the ticket line is where Japan's school system shows up. Many price lists are set by school year, and the "adult" price can start at 13. We read the admission entries copied from official pages on this site.
What we looked at
- Base: 944 published spots with an admission-fee entry from an official or local-government tourism page (checked 2026-09-24 to 2026-09-28).
- Method: text search on 2026-09-29, then a read of some matches. The numbers are "at least", and one entry can fall in more than one row.

About two thirds of all admission entries (629 of 944) mention a child, school-year or preschool price.
School years, not ages
Japanese price lists often use these words. The usual ages are a rough guide only; the place decides.

The catch is where "adult" starts. At least 92 entries treat junior high pupils as adults, and at least 60 start the adult price at high school. Examples from the official pages:
- Kongobu-ji, Koyasan (Wakayama): junior high and older 1,000 yen, elementary 300 yen, preschoolers free.
- Ikoma Kogen, Miyazaki: adults (junior high and older) 700 yen; elementary and preschool free.
- Seitenkyu, Saitama: adults (high school and up) 500 yen, junior high 250 yen, elementary and under free.
- Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge, Miyazaki: adults and high school students 500 yen, elementary and junior high 350 yen, under school age free.
Some places use ages instead
- Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden, Shizuoka: adults 2,000 yen, children (4 to elementary) 1,000 yen, under 4 free.
- Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium: general 800 yen, elementary to high school 400 yen, preschoolers free.
Tips for families
- Read who counts as an adult before you budget. A 13-year-old may pay the adult price.
- Bring the child's passport if you might be asked about age. We have not checked which places ask for proof; the pages we read do not say.
