Whisky, beer and sake tastings in Japan: who cannot drink, and what official pages say

A distillery or brewery visit usually ends with a tasting. Before you plan one, check two things on the official page: how you are getting there, and how old everyone in your group is.

Who cannot taste

From the notes copied from official pages on this site:

• Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery, Hokkaido: people under 20 and anyone driving a car, motorbike or bicycle cannot taste alcohol; soft drinks are offered. Under-20s cannot join a tour on their own.
• Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery, Miyagi: drivers (car, motorbike or bicycle), people under 20, and pregnant or breastfeeding people cannot taste alcohol; soft drinks are provided.
• Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, Osaka: the page says that by law, drivers of cars, motorbikes or bicycles, including those riding with them, and anyone under 20 cannot drink alcohol.

Two points to note:

1. Bicycles count. All three pages include cyclists with drivers.
2. The age is 20, not 18. A group with 18- or 19-year-olds should plan for soft drinks.

How tastings work at other places

• Sapporo Beer Museum, Hokkaido: a paid Tasting Hall after the visit, with a limit of 30 minutes.
• Ponshukan Echigo-Yuzawa Station, Niigata: a sake-tasting corner with every brewery in Niigata.
• A-FACTORY, Aomori: for the tasting upstairs, buy a prepaid card and the machine pours cider up to its value.

Plan it like this

1. Do not drive to a tasting if you want to drink. Check the access line for a train or bus. See Can you reach Japanese sights without a car?
2. Check whether the tour needs a reservation on the official page before you go.
3. Bring ID if anyone could be asked their age. We have not checked which places ask; the notes we read do not say.
