Taxi fares in Tokyo: how the meter works, the late-night rate and airport fixed fares
In Tokyo's 23 wards, the meter starts at 500 yen for the first 1.0 km, and a 20% surcharge applies from 22:00 to 5:00. Here is the official fare table from the Tokyo taxi association, and how to read it.

Taxis in Japan use a meter, and the rules behind it are published. This article covers Tokyo's 23 wards and the cities of Musashino and Mitaka, using the fare table of the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association, checked on 2026-09-29. Other areas of Japan have their own fares; we have not checked them here.
The Tokyo fare table

The association marks these as upper-limit fares (上限運賃). So this is the most a company can charge under this table; the meter in your taxi is what counts.
For comparison, the Tama area of Tokyo uses the same first fare, but adds 100 yen every 211 m, and every 1 min 20 s in slow traffic.
What this means in practice
- Traffic counts. In slow traffic the meter keeps rising by time, not just distance.
- Night rides cost more. From 22:00 to 5:00 the fare is 20% higher.
- Calling a taxi can add a fee. The pick-up fee in the table is for when a taxi comes to you.
- Long rides get a small discount on the part above 9,000 yen.
We have not measured typical fares for routes, so we do not give example prices. The association's site has a fare search if you want an estimate for a route.
Airport fixed fares
The association lists fixed fares to and from Haneda Airport and Narita Airport, and to Tokyo Disney Resort, offered by participating companies. The fixed fare depends on the area and the company, so check the association's airport pages and confirm with the driver or company before you set off.
Tips
- Show your destination written in Japanese, or as a pin on a map, to avoid confusion.
- Ask before the ride if you want to pay by card.
