Driving to Japanese sights: parking, shuttle buses and car-free towns, from 1,221 official notes
Plenty of sights have free parking, but some towns ban cars, some car parks have closing times, and some sights ask you to park and ride. Here is what official parking notes say, with real examples.

If you rent a car in Japan, one set of questions comes at the other end: is there parking, is it free, and can you drive in at all? We read the parking notes copied from official pages on this site.
What we looked at
- Base: 1,221 published spots with a parking note from their official page, checked 2026-09-24 to 2026-09-28.
- Method: text search on 2026-09-29, then a read of some matches. The numbers are "at least", and a note can fall in more than one row.

When you cannot drive in
- Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata: cars, coaches and motorbikes may not enter the town. Day visitors park at a car park outside it.
- Aoni Onsen, Aomori: in winter, leave your car at a car park at the foot of the mountain and take the shuttle.
- Nara Park: there are three prefectural car parks, but the page suggests the free park-and-ride car parks if you must drive.
- Otsuka Museum of Art, Tokushima: a free shuttle bus runs from the dedicated car park.
When the sight has no car park of its own
- Hakodate Ropeway: no car park of its own and no partner car parks; nearby paid car parks are listed.
- Mt. Moiwa Ropeway, Sapporo: a paid car park at the base station; the scenic toll road to the mid-station car park is open only for part of the year (April 24 to November 20 in 2026).
Seasonal limits
Some notes say parking is restricted in flower seasons, for example coach parking in the cherry-blossom season, or restrictions during the red spider lily season.
Before you set off
- Check the parking line in the fact table for each stop.
- Look for "shuttle", "park and ride" or "no entry" and plan the last part of the trip.
- Check the car park's hours if you will stay late. At Chusonji, for example, car park 1 is open 8:30-17:00 from March to November and 8:30-16:30 from December to February.
- In flower and leaf seasons, check for restrictions and consider public transport.
